Why dating doesn't exist in Film Noirs
In the dating World, experts say destiny is nonexistent and everybody should be demanding perfection. Even going on to say dating itself is easy. Even being self absorb, manipulative and greedy should be condoned. Whether a popular trend or not, finding an ideal partner IS hard. Which is why most stay single.
Films noirs are a genre of movies which can either end with the male and female together or betraying. The word to describe how they meet isn't through dating. Rather fate but in a twisted way. The male lead is a man who'll do anything to keep the female lead who seduces him. She encourages him by her words and honesty.
He has his job of which she doesn't criticize and he accepts her for who she is. They may be up to something which is no good, of course. However, that isn't what they feel for each other. They want a better life together and get away from the obstacles in the way. We as the audience can see that.
Their is a previous or potentially ending relationship which was toxic or worse. There's reason for the new romance to happen and it is inevitable. Despite the cruel deeds which arise. Double indemnity (1944) is one classic example. As the audience, we find ourselves cheering them on when we shouldn't.
From the Bribe (1949) to Postman Always Rings Twice (1944), these romances are not shallow and obsessive about perfection. They are strong and keep behind quiet time alone. Despite the danger and scheming plots unfolding in the story. As the audience we want the pair to be together, their chemistry radiates. Even potentially behind the scenes as well.
One thing to learn from these films is simple: love is secretive and alluring with a like minded soul.
