Why 'Basic Instinct's Catherine and Nick are a memorable (Neo) Film Noir couple

The 1992 Erotic Neo Film Noir was both popular and controversial upon release. Not to mention a certain scene concerning the female main character during a police interrogation. The movie sparked real life outrage and similar crimes. But these topics are not what fans of the film think about. Rather, prefer to ignore.

The chemistry and twist of fate between Nick Curran and Catherine Tramell is no better than Samson and Delilah from Biblical times. Both have done things in their past which parallels the other. Faced with danger and done things which others would shun them for. They both know a great deal about each other. Not to mention have a profound attraction.

To those around them, they feel this is a physical attraction which won't lead to anything. Or they are jealous and bitter like Roxy. A relationship like theirs is better off clandestine. A crooked and tormented cop and a femme fatale novelist, sounds like an interesting story. Since this tale is both alluring and thrilling especially.

Nick is not a hero, we can all agree, but anything Catherine tries to irate him with, it isn't overlooked. She's got him wrapped around her finger, and more. Imagine having a love interest knowing all the ugly things about yourself, free of judgement and dread. Not many would want passion, this film has it covered.

The instrumental soundtrack is both seductive and intense like the film itself. If there was a song to summarize this film, it would be 2011's 'Take Care'. A song about desire and finding a kindred spirit. Even though there's opposition and cause to move forward. It's a song which could have been used in the club scene as Catherine entices Nick and he can no longer resist.

Catherine makes Nick fall under her spell, so to speak. No matter what he cannot stop his feelings. It's this kind of chemistry that makes a good story, even if its a film noir. When two unlikely persons hook up and it's a wild ride. Which is why Nick and Catherine are a memorable Neo noir couple.
